BCFE Graduate Design Exhibition May 17th at Farmleigh
Nib and Thread — the 22nd Graduate Design Exhibition of Ballyfermot College of Further Education — opens on May 17th at The Cowshed, Farmleigh, Phoenix Park from 17.30 (note: this is a date change from our original post, due to traffic restrictions around Ed Sheeran concert).
Launching the exhibition this year we are delighted to have BCFE Graphic Design graduate Edel Quinn, Art Director at the award-winning creative agency Chemistry.
This year’s exhibition profiles the work of the graduands from three of our Higher National Diplomas: Illustration, Textile Fibre Art, and Graphic Design. Students investigate art and design practices through a range of disciplines both traditional and contemporary through their education in studio; live projects such as Sash; and their exhibition Under the Covers, both hosted by our local Ballyfermot Library.
HND Illustration graduate Karen Vaughan has had amazing year following the publication of Tangleweed & Brine – an illustrated book which won a Bord Gáis Energy Book Award; the Easons Teen/Young Adult Book of the Year and an Irish Times Ticket Readers’Choice Award.
HND Textile Fibre Art graduate Ina Olohan was awarded Emerging Artist by the RDS last August. Alaina Flynn, one of our graduands of HND in Textile Fibre Art is the only Irish artist to have been accepted in the 20th Mini Textile Exhibition in Bratislava in late May.
Illustration graduands Harry Conway & Kellie Marks have been highlighted by Imagine FX Magazine as ones to watch/new talent.
Illustration students and members of the Ballyfermot Communiversity group worked together over a period of months on a collaborative art and storytelling project. This intergenerational project involved the students from both establishments working together to illustrate their lives and stories- recalling events within their lifetimes. As part of the celebrations of Ballyfermot 70 years anniversary, the work will be exhibited in early June.
Graduates of our HNDs in Textile Fibre Art, Graphics and Illustration took part in Art Source, RDS, in November 2017- a terrific platform for their work. Our graduates will pursue different pathways – some gain advanced entry into higher education and others will work freelance within the illustration, graphics and applied arts areas.
National Drawing Day is taking place on May 19th. As part of the celebrations teachers and graduands from BCFE will facilitate a workshop of foiling, felt and illustration from 1pm-3pm.
The exhibition Nib and Thread will be open for public viewing from Wednesday May 16th to Friday May 18th from 10am-5pm, and Saturday May 19th from 10am-4pm. All are welcome.
