Media Stream
The Media stream offers a dynamic and comprehensive toolkit for the modern creator, covering the full spectrum of contemporary broadcasting and digital journalism. This pathway encourages a multi-platform approach where you will develop essential skills in radio and podcast production, investigative journalism, and live broadcasting, alongside a critical understanding of social media strategy and digital trends. With a strong emphasis on current industry practices, you will learn to communicate across diverse formats, ensuring you can adapt to the fast-changing demands of journalism, commercial media, and digital content production, ultimately becoming a versatile strategist capable of engaging audiences in the digital age.

Provider Location
This is a new Tertiary degree programme delivered across 4 years. City of Dublin FET College Ballyfermot and the School of Media in TU Dublin have designed the programme together, with this delivery model:
- Years 1, 2 and 3 are based in City of Dublin FET College Ballyfermot
- Year 4 is based in TU Dublin.
What Do You Need To Apply?
The minimum entry requirements for this programme are:
- Leaving Certificate with five subjects at grade O6/H7,
or - Leaving Certificate with four subjects at grade O6 plus LCVP with distinction
or - Leaving Certificate Applied with distinction
or - Hold QQI Level 4 award with a minimum of a grade of distinction
Other qualifications Applicants may also present, A-Levels or other EU qualifications for equivalency. Qualifications from countries other than Ireland or the UK should be accompanied with a comparability statement from the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC).
Mature Applicants Applications from mature students aged 23 or over on January 1 of the year of application are welcome, and may be called to interview to outline their holistic life and career experience, interest in and aptitude for the field of study, and recognition of prior learning (see below).
All applicants whose first language is not English and who have not been educated through the medium of English must demonstrate CEFR proficiency at B2 for access. An Irish Leaving Certificate qualification achieved through English meets this requirement. Applicants who have full Level 5 or 6 QQI award obtained in Ireland will not be required to provide evidence of English language proficiency.
Applicants will be interviewed by City of Dublin FET College Ballyfermot. They are not expected to show expertise in political, societal or media practices but should display an interest in, and aptitude for, the disciplines.
In addition to the Entry Requirements, for this course you will also need to provide a portfolio of your recent work. Please see the ‘Portfolio Guidelines’ for details.
Portfolio Guidelines
All applicants must submit an original portfolio of recent media-related work. The portfolio will form part of the interview discussion.
Your submission should include work that is current, relevant to your application, and demonstrates your creative ability and potential. The focus should be on the quality of work presented rather than the quantity.
Example Portfolio Content
- Written Material A piece that demonstrates strong narrative ability, such as a script, short story, article, or school essay.
- Photography A selection of photographs taken by you (phone or camera) that show an understanding of composition, lighting, and subject choice. Maximum of 20 images .
- Video/Film Work Any film or video project you have created or contributed to. For group productions, clearly indicate the sections that demonstrate your specific role and contribution.
- Optional Additional Material
- Storyboards for a completed or proposed project.
- Audio work such as music recordings, podcasts, or sound design/audio created for a visual project.
