Our Advanced Games Production and Design course will provide you with the skills required to turn pen and paper game designs into fully functional interactive products. Using industry-standard tools, theory, techniques and cutting-edge technology you can bring your ideas to life and then test them out online with the gaming community.

Students on this course have won the Black Shamrock Scholarship which provides funding to enable students to continue their studies. Students on the course can also avail of a portfolio review offered by Black Shamrock on their annual visit to the college.

Over the past number of years, students on this course have visited Helsinki & Kajaani in Finland for an Erasmus funded work placement with the eRacing Super League and CSE Entertainment.

Many of our graduates have gained employment in world-class companies, while others have established companies of their own.

What do you need to apply?

In addition to the Entry Requirements, for this course, please note for this course you may also need to provide a portfolio of your recent work. Please see the ‘Portfolio Guidelines’ for details.

Year 1 Higher National Certificate

  • A suitable BCFE QQI Level 5 award, with a merit profile, that satisfies the entry requirements is Games Production and 3D Graphics Level 5 (DLO).
    • Students with a merit profile or higher can progress automatically to year 1, subject to availability.
    • Students with a pass profile can also apply but will need to supply a portfolio of work showcasing their technical and creative skills.

Year 2 Higher National Diploma

  • Students who have successfully completed year 1 and have achieved a Higher National Certificate in Game Development can progress automatically to year 2.
  • Applicants with an equivalent Higher National Certificate, and subject to module compatibility, may also apply directly to Year 2, Higher National Diploma in Game Development.

Portfolio Guidelines

Students applying for the Advanced Games Production and Design Course who do not have a Merit profile or higher in a QQI Level 5 award related to Game Development should supply an original digital portfolio of their best work completed within the past few years. Acceptable Portfolio content includes

  • Game Design Preferably display the game running in an executable file from a game engine such as Unity3D or Unreal.
  • Artwork A digital portfolio of artwork, showing up to ten pieces. Photographs of handmade pieces are acceptable.
  • Web or App Design Any published websites or apps. Wireframe prototypes are also acceptable

Progression Opportunities

Graduates of this course may also apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to higher and advanced certificate and degree programmes at national Institutes of Technology, Technological Universities and Universities, where graduates gain exemption of one or two years from game degree courses in Ireland, (applicants should confirm linked awards and eligibility requirements with the relevant Higher Education Institution).
